5 Reasons You Should Apply to be on Advertising Club’s Executive Board

By Mari Behovitz

With Advertising Club elections fast approaching, there is no better time to share with you some insights on how valuable being on the executive board can be. Check out our Ad Club page on Orgsync for detailed descriptions on each position. Take those into consideration as you read on.

Here are the main five reasons you should consider being on the Advertising Club Executive board:

  1. Gaining Experience When You Have None

Getting a job or internship seems impossible when you have only worked at a fast food chain while you were in high school. You need more relevant course experience if you want to stand out in the crowd. Joining eboard will not only give you the opportunity to gain relevant industry experience, but you also don’t even have to leave GVSU to get it.

  1. Beefing up your Resume and LinkedIn

It’s time to beef up your resume and get you ready for that job you’ve had your eyes on all this time. We have all taken classes on advertising and public relations, so don’t count on that to get you the job. You have to do something to stay competitive and stand out from the crowd. Holding an executive board position shows potential employers that you are working hard on your own time to learn more about the industry, in addition to holding a leadership role. It shows drive and dedication, and that’s what’s important when it comes to trying to stay ahead of the competition.

  1. Engaging Directly with Professionals

This might be the number one most important reason you should consider joining the executive board. As an executive board member, you are continuously engaging with professionals. You set up agency tours, plan meetings, and attend networking events. You are reaching out on behalf of a student organization so it takes the awkwardness out of the situation.  If the other reasons haven’t convinced you then hopefully this one does.

  1. Hands-on Learning

Many of the tasks performed by executive board members are ones you would actually do in an internship. Social media management, graphic design, event planning, and networking are just some of the possible tasks you could be expected to complete while being a member of the board. What makes this learning experience even better is that you get to do it without the pressure of it being an actual internship or job.

  1. Becoming Part of A Community

Being a member of the executive board is like being a member of a very dedicated team. It can be a lot of work at times, but we always know that by working together we can get it done. Being an executive board member will allow you to get to know other motivated students in the APR program and make strong connections that will last through your time at Grand Valley and beyond.

You may start off as peers, but as the semesters go by and countless late night board meetings occur, you will realize you have made some great friends along the way. Friends that may be in the same courses as you, complete the same internships as you, and someone you can always turn to for advice.

Many of us on the current executive board are seniors and our time is coming to an end with Advertising Club. Help us carry on the advertising club legacy and continue to improve it by becoming a member of our incredible team. Don’t be nervous about applying. You will never regret joining, in fact, it has been one of my favorite parts at Grand Valley.

Applications open February, 14th! We can’t wait to see what you have to offer and to welcome you onto our team.
